Surge Protection Devices
When looking to protect an installation against over voltage, we must give some consideration to external cables entering the building. PV (Photovoltaic) Solar installations will come into this bracket.
SPDs (Surge Protection Devices) for PV systems are there to protect the inverter and the fixed installation. PV SPD’s should be installed on the DC side of the PV system, before the inverter. These will always be Type 2 devices, unless the building has an external lightning protection system and the correct separation distance to BSEN 62305-3 has not been maintained, where you would install a Type 1 SPD.
Type 2 and Type 1 & 2 variants are included in this range from 600V to 1500V.
